Also known as El Matorral Airport, Fuerteventura Airport is the only air facility serving the island of Fuerteventura. The airport was established in the 1960s, and currently handles about five million passengers per year. The popular capital of Puerto del Rosario is about five kilometres from the airport, and recently received a massive refurbishment.
There is one two-storey terminal located at the airport. Shopping is available in the form of book stores, news agencies and fashion stores, mostly open between 07:30 and 22:00. Restaurants can be found in the pre-security and departure zones. Wireless internet is also offered throughout the two terminals.
Car Hire Fuerteventura Airport
Car hire in Fuerteventura Airport is an easy way to escape the airport with ease and see the sights of the island. Avis, Cicar, Hertz, Top Car Auto Reisen and Payless are the companies offering reliable rental services on the ground floor of the airport. Taxis and buses serve passengers too, but hiring a vehicle is much more convenient and economical.
From the airport, passengers can drive all over the island in a matter of no time. Road conditions are great for travellers, as roads are well maintained with plenty of signs and less traffic than the European mainland. Drivers need to be over 18 to be behind the wheel, and it’s advised to compare car hire online prior to reaching the island to secure the lowest rental prices.
Things To See and Do
The airport is close to the southern beaches of Fuerteventura, where wind surfing and other sports dominate the sand. El Cotillo is a beautiful little fishing village that boasts a tremendous beach. In the capital, a sculpture park attracts tourists, while Cofete’s Winter Villa is another popular spot. They can all be reached via car rental in Fuerteventura Airport.
Best Time To Visit
During the summer months of May, June and July the island receives most of its visitors. However, with temperatures averaging around 24°C for the entire year, tourists will find any time of the year delightful in Fuerteventura. The coolest months (January and February) only drop down to about 22°C on average and a lack of crowds make this an attractive time for a trip.
