Girona Airport is located just under eight miles from the city of Girona and 57 miles from Barcelona, in the northeast of Spain’s Catalonia. It handles around five million passengers every year, with flights to and from Belgium, the Czech Republic, England, France, Sweden and other parts of Spain, and is seen as an alternative to Barcelona’s main airport. It is mainly used for connections to the south of France.
The single terminal airport is quite small. Facilities in the building are limited, with a small selection of restaurants, snack bars and shops. Parking is available for 3,500 cars over three buildings for both short- and long-term stays. The ground floor hosts more than 30 check-in desks while the first floor features 11 boarding gates.
Car Hire Girona Airport
A range of public transport is available, including bus services to Girona and Barcelona, but car rental in Girona Airport is the most direct and most convenient way to travel. In order to get the best deal, visitors should compare car hire rates online before arrival. Economy Car Hire, Avis, Europcar and several other companies operate at the airport.
When using car hire in Girona Airport, Barcelona can be reached in less than 1 hour, 30 minutes via the AP7 motorway. Be aware that AP roads are tollways. Drivers must comply with parking regulations in Barcelona itself as tow trucks are in use in the city. Roads in and around Girona are mostly in good condition and should present few problems.
Things To See and Do
A rental car will enable visitors to explore the beaches, natural parks and attractions along the Catalan coast. The airport is connected to main roads which lead to Girona City, which is filled with interesting old buildings. The Costa Brava, especially the tourist hot spots of Lloret de Mar and Blanes, is a 30-minute drive away, while Barcelona can be reached in less than 90 minutes, as can the Pyrenees and Andorra.
Best Time To Visit
