Larnaca
Much of the history of Larnaca, the oldest city on the island of Cyprus, may appear to be buried beneath scores of modern beach hotels and restaurants. However, car rental in Larnaca is the easiest way to uncover many of Larnaca’s hidden treasures, the most famous of which is the Zenobia wreck beneath Larnaca Bay’s surface.
Transport
Passengers can sometimes see the Zenobia wreck’s shadow aboard a flight entering Larnaca International Airport, which stands next to Larnaca’s famous Salt Lake six kilometres west of the 6,000-year-old city centre. However, visitors can also rent bicycles, mopeds, or scooters to travel around Larnaca, whose only public transportation options are buses and taxis.
Car Hire Larnaca
Local Cypriot car hire companies stand alongside internationally famous firms like Budget, Avis, Sixt, Thrifty, Argus, Hertz, and National. Visitors should compare car hire before making their choice to get the best rates in Larnaca. Busy rush hour traffic is the only major problem motorists will encounter along the B4, the main thoroughfare linking Larnaca to its airport.
Driving
Motorists with car hire in Larnaca should first know Cyprus is a country where people drive on the left side. It is easy to travel between Larnaca’s modern beach resort area and its far older city centre with a rental car. Larnaca’s main motorway is called the B4. On all routes, drivers should exercise caution as locals often ignore road rules and use their horns frequently.
Things To See and Do
Visitors can easily spend their entire stay in Larnaca sunbathing next to their hotel pools or along the city’s 25kms worth of beaches. However, history buffs may also want to travel the seven kilometres to Kiti, a village most famous for its fifth century Panagia Angeloktisti Church. A family-friendly camel park is the main attraction at another seaside village, Mazotos, 22kms southwest of Larnaca.
Best Time To Visit
Larnaca’s climate is even warmer than most other parts of Cyprus, with August average daytime temperatures soaring to a scorching 35°C. Visitors who find summer temperatures and crowds too hot to handle may prefer to come in spring or autumn, when weather remains sunny, warm, and usually free of rain. Larnaca’s winters may be unpredictable, but rarely unpleasantly cold, with an average annual temperature as mild as 16°C.
