A student that was based in the UK is to be charged with attempting to blow up a jet as it came in to land at Detroit Airport on Christmas Day. Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, who was aboard the Delta Airways flight from Amsterdam, tried to fuse to substances together as the plane was flying over the downtown Detroit area. He was subdued by passengers and staff and suffered severe burns as he and the area around caught fire.

The incident has caused an international investigation as police in the UK have executed a search warrant on the suspects address in London. A number of items from the home were removed for further investigation by Met Police. A Federal Court Judge has officially charged the Nigerian with terrorism of trying to blow a US jet.

Officials in the US have been criticised over the incident as apparently Mutallab was on an international watch list, but was still allowed to fly to the US. His farther, a Nigerian banker, had also apparently warned the US Government that his son was a potential danger.

The failed bomber said that he acquired the potentially explosive mix while in Yemen. He had then flown from Nigeria to Amsterdam and then onward to Detroit where he had planned to blow up the plan. Mutallab has also admitted that he was working for Al-Qaeda when he attempted the bombing.

In a similar story another Nigerian was arrested on Sunday by the FBI after he refused to come out of a toilet on same route two days later. Despite repeat request from cabin crew he would not come out. After a short investigation it was discovered the unnamed man was actually ill and he was released by the Bureau.
