It now seems that the UK government is attacking Network Rail’s plan to give out very lucrative bonuses. On top of all of this, the UK transport minister has already told other MPs that the government’s ability to prevent these kinds of bonuses is very limited at best.

This news comes on the heels of an announcement by Network Rail that its chief executive, Sir David Higgins, is to receive a £340,000 bonus. Of course, this is a bonus that he is under extreme pressure to reject. Now, the former Labour transport minister Tom Harris is in on the action. Mr. Harris has tabled a motion for Mr. Higgins to turn down this huge payment.

Network Rail did go on to confirm that a meeting would be held later this month. During this meeting, they will decide on the structure of the bonus scheme. Of course, Mr. Harris is not just worried about the huge payment going to the chief executive. He is also very keen on the idea of rejecting bonuses for other directors. These bonuses could all add up to around £200,000.

Many feel that Sir David does not need this bonus. After all, it is said that his annual salary is already at £560,000. Other directors at Network Rail are not doing to bad for themselves either. Reports show that some other directors make around £338,000 a year.

Industry experts have pointed out that they do not think that Network Rail directors need a bonus this year. After all, this talk of “huge bonuses” comes just after Network Rail admitted health and safety breaches over the death of two teenage girls.

According to new reports, the European Union has lifted a travel ban on top Burmese politicians. This does include President Thein Sein. All of this has been to acknowledge the country’s recent movement towards opening up. This is something that the European Union views as very positive.

In a recent statement, the European Council said that it welcomes the remarkable program of political reform undertaken by the leaders of the Southeast Asian country. It is amazing the progress the country has made after being governed by a repressive military junta.

In fact, it was not until after the elections in 2010, that Burma transferred power from the military back to the civilian government. Now, things for the area can start to improve again. Burma’s government has of course allowed the opposition to officially register for upcoming elections. It has also made reconciliation efforts with armed ethnic groups and has released dozens of political prisoners.

Suu Kyi, who is actually a Nobel Peac Laurete, was detained by Burma’s government for a total of 15 years. He will now be able to run for a vacant seat in parliament in April.

In a recent statement, the European Union said that they find particular importance in the free and fair conduct of the elections. This is why travel bans have now been lifted on top Burmese politicians. Things can finally start moving forward.

The United States has been against the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme since the start of it. However, new reports now show that airlines in the US could actually make a surplus of money off it. Thus, why are so many airlines against it?

Reports from US analysis say that airlines could net almost £1.6 billion from this European Union carbon tax. This would mean that this emissions scheme would actually benefit airlines, and not harm them.

This news was brought to light by a US Federal Aviation Administration funded study. Bill Hemmings, who is an aviation spokesman for the European environmental group Transport and Environment, said that it called seriously into question air industry claims that the trading scheme would leave them out-of-pocket.

Mr. Hemmings went on to say that he feels, on the contrary, the real costs will probably be covered by being able to pass them on to passengers with minimal impact on their business. The fact that the United States government-funded report says they could make a profit leaves some people unsympathetic to their cries that the trading scheme will cost them billions.

Although the airlines could stand to make money off it, there is still one group of people that will feel the backlash, and that would be consumers. As Bill pointed out himself, these extra costs could easily be pushed off onto consumers. This would mean that the cost of travel will rise once again for airline passengers.

Reports now show that millions of commuters could be facing increasing ticket prices. This is because one of Britain’s biggest train firms has announced that it will be cutting its off-peak travel period. This will of course double the cost of most long-distance fares. Experts say that passengers will be spending at least 5.9 percent more when this change goes live.

Of course, there are some consumers who could end up paying even more than that. In fact, some consumers could be spending up to 11 percent more on select routes. A few experts say that some routes could even suffer larger rises. One company even chose to shave four and a half hours from its off-peak travel window. All of this translates into more money paid by the consumer.

The move that most people are paying attention to is the one made by CrossCountry. This is part of the German-owned transport giant Arriva. This group is responsible for one in ten of all UK rail services. Thus, a slash in off-peak travel time means that thousands of Brits will have to pay more money now.

The most-recent changes will mostly be related to services from the South-West to the north of England and Scotland. Here, the off-peak travel period used to start at 5am. Now, it may not start until 9:30am. This means, most people that used to benefit from the off-peak travel rate while heading to work will no longer enjoy those savings. However, this will add up to big earnings for the train company.

It seems that the Office of Fair Trading is doing what it can to try and protect travelers. In fact, the agency is now looking into claims that holidaymakers are paying way too much on travel charges. Something has to be done or travelers will not have enough travel money left to take a holiday.

The Office of Fair Trading was asked back in September if it would investigate these allegations. A spokeswoman for the agency said that there has been a substantial reaction to this request. People all over are waiting to hear what the outcome is here.

Consumer Focus, who asked the Office of Fair Trading to investigate this matter, said that it believes that consumers are spending around £1 billion a year on exchanging money. They went on to add that it is unclear how much of these charges are warranted.

Consumer Focus went on to say that the watchdog said charges for using debit and credit cards overseas are unnecessarily complex and confusing. They add phrases like “0% commission”, which is very misleading to people.

It is still not clear what the Office of Fair Trading will do about this. It is not even known yet if they will agree with Consumer Focus on the matter. Either way, a lot of people are awaiting an answer from the Office of Fair Trading. The way that prices have been rising lately, most travelers are hoping that this agency agrees with the consumer watchdog.

It now seems that a lot of people are up in arms over a story regarding EasyJet and a woman named Joanna Jones. Apparently, she was stopped from boarding because her guide dog had no documentation. Since then, EasyJet has apologized to the blind woman. They told reporters that the woman was prevented from boarding her flight last Sunday because her guide dog had no documentations.

Reports show that Joanna Jones flew from Belfast to Gatwick last week with her dog on a different airline. It was not until she tried to board her EasyJet flight that she ran into a problem. Although the dog was wearing an official harness and collar tag, she was told that her dog must have documentation.

The lady was finally able to fly home on Monday. However, she only got to fly home after EasyJet was contacted by the Guide Dogs Association of Belfast. It was at this point that the airline transferred her to another flight.

Barry Toner, who is Jones’s fiance, said that he uses a guide dog as well. He received a call on Sunday telling him that Joanna was not able to fly home on her original flight. Toner said that they were asking her to prove that her dog was, in fact, a guide dong with a certificate. Toner finished up by saying the certificate they speak of is not one that was given to them. It is not a document that they, or any other guide dog owners online, have ever heard of.

Despite all the people who are against the increase, it seems that Air Passenger Duty is set to rise again. In fact, it has been said that it will increase as much as 10 percent next year. This means that travelers will now face a sharp increase to their ticket prices.

Just this past week, the Treasury said that it will raise this tax on April 1 of next year. This is what was planned in the 2011 Budget. This week, they are going to address the possibility of changing the duty’s controversial banding system.

So what does the government hope to achieve by introducing this increase? Apparently, they hope to recover about £2.6 billion from the Air Passenger Duty in the 2011-12 financial year. This is about £400 million more than the last financial year. The Office of Budget Responsibility has predicted that this figure will rise another £200 million in the next financial year.

Figures go on to show that the Air Passenger Duty is set to rise at double the rate of inflation. This is why so many people are upset about it. This means a family of four visiting the United States will have to add another £24 to the £240 they are charged already. That is a lot of extra money for a family that had a hard time saving up enough money for the trip as it is. This increase is going to do nothing more than burden holidaymakers and hurt the travel industry even more.

It now seems that Ronnie Biggs, who was part of the 15 member gang that was responsible for the Great Train Robbery, has just recently released the updated version of his autobiography. For those that do not know, Ronnie is now 82 years old. He is also unable to talk or walk due to the several strokes that he has had. However, he did want to express the remorse that he felt for the death of mail train driver Jack Mills. This is the same man who never recovered from the assault that took place during the train robbery.

Back in 1963, Biggs was one of the 15 member gang that stormed the Post Office train that was en route from Glasgow to Watford. The mob jumped the train after they fixed a red signal to make the train halt in a secluded area near Buckinghamshire. When Jack Mills got out to investigate what happened, he was hit hard by one of the gang members.

The whole mob was able to escape with over 120 post bags of bank notes worth more than £2.6 million. However, Mills was left with serious injuries that he would never recover from. Seven years after the assault, the driver died.

Biggs, during an interview, wrote down his answers to questions that were asked. Either way, he compared himself to Katie Price. He noted that he was proud of everything that he had achieved in his life. However, he still remains very remorseful about his crimes. He felt like he was the loveable rouge.

Most people agree that texting in the car is not a good idea. In fact, in California texting while driving has been banned altogether. However, does that mean that someone is allowed to use their phone while they are stopped at a traffic light? Apparently, after a recent court appeal, it has been made clear that there will be no texting in cars period. Whether the car is still or moving, no one is to be texting.

This news comes to light after a driver was found using his phone while at a stop light. Apparently, he was given a ticket for his citation. The driver was trying to fight the ticket by saying that he was not texting while driving, because he was stopped at a traffic light.

Either way, this new ruling answers all questions regarding whether a person can text at all while behind the wheel of a car. Anyone who lives in California knows that the cell phone ban went into effect about four years ago. The ruling stated that, although he was stopped at a red light, his car was still idling. Thus, the court says that the man was still driving the vehicle.

Carl Nelson, who is a resident of California, was given his ticket in December 2009. When fighting the ticket, his whole case was based on the Supreme Court ruling made in 1991 that said the term ‘drive’ requires evidence of ‘volitional movement’. Thus, since he was sitting at a light, he was not moving. However, the court has now come forward to clarify this rule.

The story regarding Jack the Cat has finally come to a close. However, the story has not ended in the way that many people would have liked. Unlike in Hollywood movies, this saga did not end with a happy ending.

Not long ago, the Jack the Cat story had a big breakthrough. Apparently, the airline was able to track down the cat. The carrier went ahead and told everyone that the cat had been found. Although the cat was in poor health, they truly believed that he would be fine. However, to be on the safe side, they were not going to send the cat home until it had a chance to recover.

Well, on Sunday evening, the cat took a turn for the worst. American Airlines has been keeping everyone up to date on Facebook. In fact, on this social-networking site, the cat has thousands of followers.

The airline went on to report that they were deeply saddened to announce, but Jack the Cat has passed away. They offered their profound sympathy to friends and family of the cat.

It has been less than two weeks since the airline first announced that they had found Jack. Apparently, the cat turned up in a JFK customs room after being missed for two months. The carrier first said that the cat looked very stressed. However, they believed he would make it. Nevertheless, later check ups would show problems that were not seen with the naked eye.

Reports show that Jack had a number of wounds on his back. These were not able to heal because his skin had deteriorated due to malnutrition. The owner of the cat said the last thing that anyone wanted to see was this cat suffer after all he had been through.
