Brits and their love for their car

Steven Powell

According to a recent survey by the car hire giant, Europcar, we Brits are more in love with our cars than our European counterparts. Almost 75 per cent of us adore having a car, which is a lot more than the average of just 60 per cent in the other six countries that were surveyed by Europcar. What would the average Briton do if they their car had to go? Well, 67 per cent of us said that we could not actually live without as it is essential to our daily lives, 61 per cent of other Europeans agreed and said that they could not live without their four wheels.

Our love for cars can only stretch so far though, as the cost of owning one and maintaining it is slowly creeping up the ladder. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers Traders, the UK is one of the cheapest places to own a vehicle within Europe. Despite this factor, savvy Brits are actually choosing to walk where they can and also use public transport. Driving styles have changed as well, with 62 per cent saying they had made changes because of fuel economy and general wear and tear on the beloved car.

Other options that have crossed the minds of  British drivers are to sell their own car and instead opt for renting a vehicle when necessary. Today there are many different options for renting a vehicle. A few firms have sprung up offering car rental by the hour. This is all very well in most cases if you are returning to the same spot, but if you need to leave it elsewhere the charges go up.
