In the wake of the Yemenia air crash the Comoran President has asked his nationals that are living in France to show restraint. The disaster resulted in the loss of 152 lives sparking large protests in Marseille on Friday.
A statement released on Saturday by President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi asked of his people that were living in France to show, “calm and serenity at a time of contemplation and mourning to secure national and international solidarity.” At the same time the statement was being heard, Yemenia announced that effective immediately they would no longer be flying to Comoros, any person who had purchased a ticket will receive a full refund.
“In light of serious incidents in recent days and major risks that some passengers posed to airport staff, our company and passengers, Yemenia has decided to no longer serve Moroni for an indefinite period from July 3 until the situation eases,” it read.
Both parties acted as a large number of protesters numbering around 10,000 went to the streets of Marseille in memory of the dead. The protesters were voicing their anger at the 19 year old jet that they say should not have been flying.
As well as the Marseille protest, Dominique Bussereau, junior transport minister for France informed Yemenia that if the quality of their planes does not improve they will be banned from flying anywhere in Europe.
