Full body scanners for all UK airports
Simon BracknellIn the aftermath of the attempted bombing of a Northwest Airlines plane in the US the British Government have said they are willing to spend the earth on full body scanners to help better protect the sky. The machines will do an x-ray of the entire body and is able detect if items have been discreetly concealed on the person of someone. They are that sensitive that they can even pick out points on the body where people have undergone plastic surgery.
The latest move is part of a massive restructuring of airport security across the British Isles and the Home Secretary, Alan Johnson, said that the UK will need these machines for better safety measures and to cut down the time that is being used on full body pat down by security staff that is taking up so much time. Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands is also introducing the scanners as the Nigerian man who tried to blow up the Detroit bound plane boarded the aircraft there.
Airports across the globe are now on a very high alert, especially for flights that are bound for the US. New restrictions have been put in place by the American Government that they say will safeguard future flights into the country. There is now a strict one hand luggage piece per person, which includes duty free bags. Passengers also have to go through a second round of body pat down and bag searches before boarding the plane. While en-route to the US, passengers must remain seated from one hour before the landing time.
