Hertz Looks to Expand Services to Take on Zipcar
Simon BracknellIt now seems that Hertz is gearing up to take on some new competition. Reports show that the car hire company is looking to expand its services in an attempt to capture the growing market. The main goal here is to capture the majority of the market before its rival Zipcar makes a big splash in the market place.
Now Zipcar has been around for awhile, but the company just recently got added onto the Nasdaq, and now Hertz has given them more notice. The biggest problem here is that Zipcar is in a market that Hertz has not really gotten into a lot yet, and that is the car-sharing sector.
Right now the car-sharing sector is proving to be pretty popular due to rising fuel prices. People are able to rent cars for a few hours and then turn the cars back in. Either way, this industry is expected to have a lot of market potential in the United State, as well as internationally.
Hertz said that they are looking to expand pick-up locations to more than 100 under its one way car-sharing program. However, the real question here is if this is going to be enough to take down Zipcar at its own game.
For those that do not know, Zipcar has actually been around for nearly a decade now. It offers a service that allows people to rent a car at an hourly or daily rate. A lot of times these cars are parked at convenient reserved spots. To be a part of this, customers have to pay an annual membership fee.
