Hertz to Introduce Electric Car Rentals in China

Apparently, the United States-based car hire company Hertz has just recently announced that it will soon be bringing electric car rentals to China. Meaning that people in China will finally have the option of going green when ever they rent a car.

Officials for Hertz said that the firm is going to start offering these environmentally friendly cars next week. Hertz will also be offering chauffeurs since the Chinese government does not recognize international driver’s permits.

To start with, the vehicles are going to be offer in three major cities. This includes Beijing, Shenzhen, and Shanghai. The first fleet will be entirely composed of brand new E6 sedans from BYD. For the people who do not know, BYD is actually a Shenzhen-based automaker.

The vice president of Hertz, Richard Broome, said that the company aims to have 30 electric vehicles available by the end of 2011. The charging stations will be provided by General Electric. However, it is important to note that the total number of stations that will be available in each city has yet to be determined.

All of this is just the latest in China’s efforts to promote renewable energy in the country. Not only that, but it is also another example of China working with the United States to bring the latest technology to their region.

Yale Zhang, who is a member of a Shanghai-based consulting firm said that these kinds of programs would not be widely available until electric car developers find new ways to extend the range of their cars. Right now these cars are only good for city driving since cars like the E6 can only go about 190 miles on one charge.
