Kingfisher Employees Now Hit with Income-tax Notices
Simon BracknellBy now, it is amazing to think that anyone is a member of Kingfisher Airlines. The airline has been unable to pay salaries for months, and now members are receiving notices to clear their tax liabilities. This will be hard for most of them to do since they have already been struggling with money (from the lack of being paid).
Reports show that Kingfisher Airlines, because they have failed to handle their tax situation, still owes close to Rs 60 Crore in taxes to the government. Now the employees are wondering why they are getting stuck paying for the airline’s tax problems when they have not been getting paid themselves.
Recently, a pilot for the airline (who has been left unnamed) said that Kingfisher has not given them a Form 16 since way back in 2009. People had no idea that the company was no longer depositing the TDS to the government. Now, instead of getting a refund, most employees owe taxes.
The finance ministry said that Kingfisher has failed to deposit service tax collected from passengers on its flights. They have failed to do this since last November. In light of this, the government froze the airline’s accounts. However, in light of the suicide that was committed by the wife on one of Kingfisher’s employees, they have released some of the money so they could pay their workers.
The government did say that some notices have been sent to employees. However, no penalties have been issued to these employees. Some employees have switched jobs, and thus, their tax liability notices were sent with them.
