Peugeot car rentals to hit London streets

Michael Bond

The European car giant Peugeot is this year investing millions of pounds on a new scheme that will see their branded vehicles hit the roads on a pay-as-you-go method. The project will not be limited to just cars though, bicycles, vans and scooters will all be available for hire on the pre-paid scheme. The new service that is called Mu is aimed at showing the public how good their vehicles are and hopefully encourage consumers to purchase one their vehicles in the long run.

The trial has already started in four French cities and has been successful and the next step will be to launch the scheme in Paris this week before branching out into other European cities like London. Customers will have an individual pre-paid card that they can top up with credit online. There is already a similar project running in London by Streetcar who has gained more than 70,000 members since their launch in 2004. Peugeot UK has confirmed the intentions of the firm to launch the project in London, but has no date confirmed as of yet.

The largest problem the manufacturer will have is the logistics of launching the hire vehicle scheme in London. Currently there is only one flag-ship dealer in the capital compared to 20 in Paris, which it is launching this week. The company has already confirmed they are looking at alternative sites that the UK customer can collect a vehicle from. This is all part of larger aim by the French car maker to propel them up into seventh on the world car sales market.
