Turkish Airlines Sees Staff Call in Sick in Protest of Draft Law
Lucy WilliamsShould all workers have the right to strike? Well, there is a new draft law that could make it illegal for workers in the aviation industry to strike in Turkey. This has caused an outcry among many workers. In fact, Turkish Airlines was forced to cancel flights on Tuesday after being hit by staff reporting to be sick in protest of this new draft law.
On top of this, Turkish Airlines’ website was also hit by what they are calling a cyber attack. Currently, it is still not working properly. Binali Yildirim, who is the transport minister for Turkey, said that 104 flights had been canceled so far. He went on to say that they are prepared to take the necessary steps if this issue was not resolved soon.
Of course, there is no doubt that the people who called in sick were reacting to the draft bill. In fact, the head of the aviation union Hava-Is said that the employees were very clearly acting in response to this draft bill. Despite this, he wanted to make it very clear that this is not an official strike by any means. The Turkish Airlines staff are only allowed to strike after a statutory process.
Alic Genc, who is a spokesman for Turkish Airlines, said that Hava-Is Union has made an illegal call for a strike. Some workers have responded to this call. It is because of this, that the airline is experiencing problems with its flight operations. It is unclear when flights will return to normal.
