UK travel websites crash after surge in weather checks

It would seem that not only are the roads becoming hard to navigate in the wintry weather much of the UK is having. Travel and weather related websites across Britain having been struggling to cope with the high demand that they are currently experiencing due to the snow and icy conditions. Hundreds of thousands of web surfers are checking on routes that they are thinking of taking to see if it passable. This is causing many key websites to crash amid a mellay of people checking at peaks times during the day, mainly just coming up to rush hour.

Among the websites that were experiencing problem were the Highways Agency, that informs users of road conditions across the UK, and the National Rail Enquiries website, that deals with rail information. Both sites had trouble coping with the high volume and had notices explaining the situation to users who logged on.

The Highways Agency also had to disable their interactive road map, which gives details on road closures and traffic jams among other useful information. Their IT department was apparently working on the problem of the high demand to satisfy the public need for information.

The National Rail Enquiries website also struggled with their latest home page and was asking users to click on another link that would be able to handle their queries better.

All this was going on during the morning rush hour as trains were cancelled, roads were very slow due to up to 10 inches of snow falling parts of the country. The snow continued throughout the day yesterday and was set to continue long into the night as temperatures dropped further.
