Location information for Gibraltar

Gibraltar, known simply as ‘The Rock', is a tiny area of British territory in Spain. With British, Spanish and North African influences, it's a vibrant and culturally diverse destination that makes for a great getaway. Among Gibraltar's best features are its wildlife and scenery. Monkeys, migrating birds, caves, tunnels and greenery all come together to make exploring the local area exciting.

Transport

[transport]

Gibraltar Airport is located close to the Spanish border and is the only airport in the territory. There is no rail service in Gibraltar, but there are five bus routes that run all over the territory and to the Spanish frontier. There is a bus route which links the airport with the city. However, for the ultimate freedom, especially if you intend to hop over to Spain, car rental in Gibraltar is the way to go.

Car Hire Gibraltar

Both self-drive and chauffeur–driven cars are available at Gibraltar Airport from AurigaCrown, Economy Car Hire and EspaCar Rent a Car, and other companies operate throughout the island. It's best to compare car hire prior to travel in order to save time on arrival and secure the car of your choice.

Driving

Car hire in Gibraltar makes connections to attractions and surrounding areas easy. The border with Spain can be easily accessed by road from anywhere in Gibraltar. Road conditions are generally good, but some roads can be very narrow and at times congested, so drivers should take extra care. Traffic drives on the right rather than on the left, as in the UK.

Things To See and Do

Gibraltar may only be small, with an area of about seven square kilometres. However, it has a lot to offer. Seaside activities include dolphin and whale watching, scuba diving, sailing and fishing. St Michael's Cave and the Siege Tunnels are great for exploring, and the views from Europa Point are stunning. Most visitors make a trip to Spain during their stay, with the resort town of Marbella just over an hour's drive away.

Best Time To Visit

Gibraltar has a subtropical Mediterranean climate, with the best weather occurring in the months of June, July and August, when there are many hours of sunshine and almost no rain. If you're looking for an insight into the local culture, visit during the fantastic National Day celebrations on 10th September. Even in winter, the temperatures are much milder than in the UK, although November and December see the highest rainfall.
