Transport

[transport]

Kefalonia Island International Airport is located just south of the town of Argostoli, and is the main air gateway to the island. Although there are public buses available they tend to be unreliable. Taxis on the other hand are reasonable and safe. But of all the transport options available, car hire in Kefalonia is always the best in terms of flexibility and economy.

Car Hire Kefalonia

Self-driving is a popular choice of transportation on Kefalonia and certainly the best way to explore many of the beaches on the island. Vehicles are readily available for hire at Kefalonia's airport, with companies such as Avis, Europcar and Budget present. Other options are located in Argostoli.

Driving

Most of the main roads on the island are paved and the roads linking the main cities such as Argostoli, Proso, Fiskardo and Sami are especially good. Roads are generally well-signposted and easy to navigate. However, reckless driving in the cities is rampant, so care needs to be taken when driving on the island.

Things To See and Do

The most famous beach on the island is Myrtos Beach, located on the northern coast and easily reached by using car rental in Kefalonia. In the southern part of the island is Mount Ainos, the highest peak. Here, visitors will find the pristine Enos Forest, which is great for hiking. The city of Argostoli also has a lot to offer, such as the Archaeological Museum and Drapano stone bridge. The caves of Kefalonia, near Sami, should also not be missed.

Best Time To Visit

The Greek islands can be visited pretty much any time of the year, but the summer months are always the peak tourist season. Summer sees the least amount of rainfall, with average temperatures of around 22°C. The winter months, on the other hand, see the most rainfall but temperatures tend to be more pleasant at around 14°C.
