Most people head straight along the coastal road to Torremolinos, Benalmadena or Fuengirola on arrival. Marbella is a little farther along this route, while in the other direction is a quieter coast. With car hire in Malaga, you can also drive to Granada to see the Alhambra palace if you have time.
